Jesus “Jesse” Chavez is a senior litigator whose practice focuses primarily on federal and state citizen suits, regulatory enforcement actions, water and air quality litigation, environmental cost recovery, contract disputes with environmental impacts, and other complex litigation matters.

Experience

  • Defended wastewater treatment plant in contract/water rights dispute with U.S. Marine Corps culminating in a defense verdict after a three-week bench trial
  • Defended a joint defense group at the former Cal Compact Landfill in California against claims by the site owner and state regulators
  • Represented oil industry clients pursuing and defending cost recovery claims at numerous sites impacted by petroleum contamination
  • Pursued on behalf of a Superfund site working group a contribution claims against more than 70 municipalities for cleanup costs at a number of mixed-use landfills
  • Defended pesticide manufacturer in CERCLA action brought by the Department of Toxic Substances Control related to a drum recycling facility
  • Defended a municipal port against a Clean Water Act suit based on alleged releases from a petroleum coke loading terminal into the Los Angeles Harbor
  • Defended a California county against large land developer regarding alleged responsibility for landfill gases migrating near residential areas
  • Defended national truck rental company against statewide litigation brought by California Attorney General’s Office and various district attorney offices regarding alleged Health & Safety Code and Business and Professions Code violations
  • Coordinated emergency response at refinery after industrial fire
