Scott T. Bluni

Partner

Scott Bluni serves as co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. His practice involves all aspects of intellectual property law, including portfolio management, licensing, product clearance, litigation and due diligence, with particular emphasis in medical devices and life science patent matters. Prior to joining Bingham, Scott was vice president and cardiovascular chief patent counsel at a major global medical device company.

Scott is a former patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he had responsibility for applications relating to metal matrix composites and other materials science applications.

  • Represents Fortune 20 retailer in various litigation and licensing matters involving patents owned by non-practicing entities
  • Represents clients in patent landscape reviews and related freedom-to-operate opinions pertaining to medical technologies and pharmaceuticals
  • Represents investors in patent diligence matters for medical device and technology companies
  • Represents clients in patent portfolio management and prosecution in areas of venous access devices, catheters, vascular implants, drug-releasing fibers, urological slings, cardiac surgery, surgical fluid management, brachytherapy, and gynecological implants
  • Represents generic pharmaceutical clients in review and analysis of competitive patents, including providing infringement and validity opinions
  • Represented cardiac surgery company in patent infringement litigation against a competitor’s vein harvesting system
  • Represented medical device company in intellectual property diligence relating to divestiture of multiple business divisions valued at several hundred million dollars
  • Represented orthopaedic company in negotiating and drafting partnership agreement valued in excess of $25 million for the development of cartilage regeneration products
  • Represented client in intellectual property diligence in the acquisition of a company practicing deep brain stimulation technologies
  • Represented medical device company in patent infringement litigation in area of peripherally inserted central catheters
