Bingham Team Helps Reunite Gitmo Client with Family

Nov. 19, 2007 — Bingham pro bono client Adel Abdul Hakim, a Uighur refugee held for four years at Guantanamo Bay despite having been cleared by the U.S. military of any terrorist or military involvement, was reunited with family members in Stockholm, Sweden, on Nov. 19, as Boston partner Sabin Willett recounts. A team of Bingham lawyers and professionals had been pressing the courts for Adel’s release since 2005. In 2006, U.S. authorities released Adel but sent him to Albania. Since that time Bingham has been working with nongovernmental organizations and Swedish attorneys to secure Adel a short-term visa to Sweden, where he has now applied for permanent asylum.
