Thurgood Marshall Fellowship

Bingham’s 2015 Thurgood Marshall Fellowship

Bingham’s Thurgood Marshall Fellowship honors the first African-American Justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and a man who had a profound effect on the civil rights movement of the 20th century. This fellowship is particularly meaningful to the firm because Justice Marshall’s son, Thurgood Marshall, Jr., is a partner in our D.C. office, having joined us after his own distinguished career in public service.

“Bingham’s commitment to this program stems from our belief that every contribution that strengthens the diversity of our profession inures to the common good of society in countless ways.” — Thurgood Marshall, Jr.

Fellowship Award

We expect to award two fellowships to the class of 2016, one in Bingham’s East Coast region and the other in our West Coast region. Recipients will receive a paid summer associate position and a $25,000 fellowship to be distributed as follows: $15,000 applied to third-year law school tuition after successful completion of our summer program (including receipt of an offer of permanent employment) and $10,000 upon commencement of full-time employment at the firm.

Selection Criteria

Candidates must expect to graduate in Spring 2016 and have outstanding undergraduate and law school academic credentials, strong oral and written communication skills, proven leadership, and a commitment to succeed as a lawyer in a large, private practice environment. Recipients will be selected based upon merit (including academic success and extracurricular activities), personal achievement, civic involvement, recommendations and a personal statement.

Application Process

To apply, please submit the following by Aug. 15, 2014: (1) a cover letter, (2) a resume, (3) undergraduate and law school transcripts, (4) a writing sample, (5) one letter of recommendation, and (6) a personal statement of 1,000 words or less addressing the following two topics: (a) How would you contribute to the diversity of the legal profession and (b) What does the following Thurgood Marshall quote mean to you:

None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody — a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony or a few nuns — bent down and helped us pick up our boots.
