JFK50: Justice for All

“JFK50: Justice for All adds an important dimension to my father’s legacy in civil rights, helping to make his ideals real to a new generation.” — Caroline Kennedy

JFK50: JUSTICE FOR ALL: On the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy presidency, Bingham — in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation — was the sole sponsor of JFK50: Justice for All, a three-year program that examined the core ideals that propelled the civil rights movement of the 1960s and have continued vital importance today. Our program explored the lessons of the past as well as the ongoing challenges that equal opportunity and diversity present today in a global business environment.

To make JFK50 resonate, we designed three unique events — in New York at Lincoln Center, Los Angeles at the Museum of Tolerance and San Francisco at the Jazz Center — where big names in business, law and government spoke openly about their personal struggles and how diversity has impacted their professional careers. None accepted any speaking fees for participation. Our impressive roster of speakers included:

New York

  • Tom Brokaw, moderator, former anchor of NBC Nightly News
  • Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times
  • Kenneth C. Frazier, chairman and CEO of Merck
  • Thurgood Marshall Jr., Bingham partner, Bingham Consulting principal
  • Susan Rice, U.S. National Security Advisor
  • Hilda L. Solis, former U.S. secretary of labor
  • Ronald Williams, retired chairman and CEO of Aetna, director of Boeing, American Express and J&J

Los Angeles

  • Eleanor Clift, moderator, contributing editor for Newsweek magazine
  • Dr. Wanda M. Austin, president and CEO of Aerospace
  • Kamala Devi Harris, attorney general of California
  • Thurgood Marshall Jr., Bingham partner, Bingham Consulting principal
  • Hilda L. Solis, former U.S. secretary of labor
  • William H. Swanson, chairman and CEO of Raytheon
  • Antonio R. Villaraigosa, former mayor of Los Angeles

San Francisco

  • John Yang, moderator, NBC correspondent and commentator
  • Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. secretary of state
  • Jason Collins, NBA player
  • Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice of the California Supreme Court
  • William H. Swanson, Raytheon chairman and CEO
  • Thurgood Marshall Jr., Bingham partner, Bingham Consulting principal

In addition to these speakers, we partnered with local educators in each city to bring JFK’s legacy into focus for the younger generation, a move much in keeping with our firm’s commitment to giving back. We are grateful to all the teachers, facilitators and speakers who were part of our parallel student-learning initiative. Over the course of the program, we were able to bring JFK’s legacy to life for elementary and high-school students, including those involved with the SMART Program in San Francisco, a close Bingham partner, helping them realize the struggles and victories of the movement and shaping their ideas of true leadership.

The JFK50: Justice for All program has been an extraordinary endeavor for Bingham. Please browse our videos to learn more about each individual event.
